It is at Deutsche Gasrusswerke GmbH & Co. KG in Dortmund, Germany, where the material diamonds are made of is being produced in an industrial scale – carbon. Founded in 1936, DGW, with its approximately 200 employees (including 20 appren-tices), is nowadays one of the leading manufacturers of Carbon Black (Old German: “ruß” – soot). Production mainly takes place for the tire industry. A large number of households in Dortmund also receives electricity and district heating from the process heat obtained during manufacturing activity. Modern technology and equipment as well as an integrated management system ensure a constant alliance between economy and ecology. Since 2000 DGW is environmentally certified in accordance with the standards of ISO 1400 and EMAS. It is the drive for continuous improvement which guides the company in all its activities, and therefore a principle of utmost importance.
